Girl power

High-flying businesswoman Julie McGowan has switched her designer suits for overalls, as she embarks on a new career as a gas engineer.

Feeling like she needed a change of direction, Julie jumped straight into an intense gas engineering course, and is now out and about on the road in her new van.

Julie said: “I get some funny looks when I am in my van! I absolutely love my job. I get a great reaction from people when I go to their houses. I think most people expect to see a female gas engineer who is a bit more of a tomboy.”

Julie said she wants to give girls leaving school a better chance if they want to get into the trades, and show that they don’t have to be pressured into going to university. Once she has her business on track she plans to start taking on apprentices to give them a chance to be a gas engineer, too.
